The first major event for the new Scarborough Open Air Theatre takes place today, Friday 23rd July, when Jose Carreras and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa take to the stage for a Opening Gala Performance. The music will be provided by the Opera North Orchestra and the evening will be hosted by Brian Blessed. This will be one of only two UK concert dates for Jose Carreras and the first time that he has performed with Dame Kiri. The restored Open Air Theatre at Scarborough, officially opened by the Queen in May, was originally built in the 1930s, and was closed to the public in 1986 now the theatre has been restored at a cost of £3.5m. That opening show will be followed a week later, on 31 July, by a second spectacular. This event is a celebration of the 1980s with several pop legends on the bill, including Boy George, Kid Creole & The Coconuts and Paul Young.
