The Moors provide a perfect setting for enjoying the outdoors, whether you prefer walking, cycling, wandering around one of the many picturesque villages, or simply enjoying the stunning scenery. Visit the market town of Pickering, which is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The Railway has been used as a set location for many famous films and TV series including Heartbeat, which is filmed in and around the nearby moorland village of Goathland. Close to Pickering is Flamingoland Adventure Theme Park and Zoo, as well as the Eden Camp Modern History Museum.
Less than an hour’s drive away is the historic City of York, which is a must-see on any trip to Yorkshire. Over 2,000 years of history is on display for you: from the Viking era at the Jorvik Viking Centre and examples of Roman architecture in the City, through to the medieval magnificence of the jewel in the crown, York Minster. Reminders of our industrial heritage can be seen at the National Railway Museum, and, whilst you're there, enjoy a panoramic vista over the city and surrounding countryside with a trip on the York Wheel.
For those of you interested in history and heritage, you will be spoilt for choice at the impressive array of stately homes, castles and abbeys. Castle Howard, immortalised in the TV drama series ‘Brideshead Revisited’, is only a short drive from Scarborough. Or take a drive to Helmsley where you you can take your pick – Duncombe Park, Rievaulx Abbey and Helmsley Castle are all waiting for you.
